The Performance Management TechKNOWvatioN contains the processes and activities involved with gathering, storing, and analyzing statistics on the factors that influence network and system performance. Performance Management includes system and network monitoring, tuning, and capacity planning activities.

• Performance Monitoring TechKNOWvatioN Service

The Performance Monitoring TechKNOWvatioN Service is the set of services that monitors and reports performance of the components of a technically complex environment. Performance Monitoring is done in real time very frequently to ensure that all system and network services are running as efficiently as possible.

• Network Monitoring

The Network Monitoring Element is the service that monitors and reports network performance. Network Monitoring is concerned with real time or frequent monitoring of network resources such as protocols, segments, and routers for the purpose of gathering and storing statistics on the factors that influence network performance.

• System Monitoring

The System Monitoring Element is the service that monitors and reports system performance. System Monitoring is concerned with real time or frequent monitoring of system resources such as CPU, memory, and I/O operations for the purpose of gathering and storing statistics on the factors that influence system performance.

• Performance Tuning TechKNOWvatioN Service

The Performance Tuning TechKNOWvatioN Service is the set of services that finds and fixes distributed computing environment performance problems. Performance Tuning is based on information collected for the Performance Monitoring TechKNOWvatioN Service, and is done primarily when problems develop or are about to develop.

• Network Tuning

The Network Tuning Element is the service that isolates, troubleshoots, and repairs network performance problems detected by the Network Monitoring Element. Network Tuning is concerned with improving the performance of the network both in response to a problem (reactive) and to prevent potential problems (proactive).

• System Tuning

The System Tuning Element is the service that isolates, troubleshoots, and repairs system performance problems detected by the System Monitoring Element. System tuning is concerned with improving the performance of the system both in response to a problem (reactive) and to prevent potential problems (proactive).

• Performance Capacity Planning TechKNOWvatioN Service

The Performance Capacity Planning TechKNOWvatioN Service is the set of services that establishes and maintains performance baselines for a technically complex environment in order to project performance capacity requirements for the environment. Performance Capacity Planning takes a user centered view of performance (i.e., how long does it take a user to perform a task), as well as a technology centered view of performance (i.e., how well is the server or network performing). Performance Capacity Planning activities are done regularly, but much more infrequently the Performance Monitoring.

• Capacity Base lining

The Capacity Base Lining Element is the service that measures and reports a technically complex environment's total throughput from a user perspective. Capacity Base lining is concerned with establishing the capability of the environment from an application point of view (i.e. how long does it take to perform a set of tasks or transactions that require both system and network resources to accomplish). Capacity baselining has a greater periodicity than System and Network Monitoring.

• Capacity Planning

The Capacity Planning Element is the service that measures and tracks the total distributed computing environment performance, and projects the performance capacity requirement for the environment. Performance Capacity Planning is concerned with a technically complex environment's current performance and what it will be in the future. Performance Capacity Planning deals primarily with time oriented characteristics.
